What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any urgent condition that causes pain, difficulty chewing, or affects your smile. These issues often stem from untreated cavities, direct trauma, or infections.
Quick action is central, as delaying treatment can lead to more severe complications that affect surrounding teeth and gums. If you’re in pain, don’t wait—Dr. Michael Davidson and our team at Edgemont Dental are ready to provide immediate relief and professional care.
What To Do If A Tooth Is Knocked Out
- Permanent tooth: Rinse it gently with water, avoiding the roots. Place it back into the socket if possible and hold it in place. If reinsertion isn’t possible, store the tooth in milk, saliva, or water to keep it moist. Contact us immediately for emergency treatment.
- Baby tooth: Do not attempt to reinsert it. Call us right away for guidance on what to do next.
The sooner you get to our office, the better the chances of saving the tooth.

Common Types of Dental Emergencies
- Severe Toothache: Persistent or sharp pain may indicate an infection or deep cavity.
- Significant Sensitivity: Sudden or extreme sensitivity to hot or cold could signal nerve exposure.
- Swollen or Sore Gums: Swelling often points to an underlying infection that requires prompt treatment.
- Jaw Pain or Locking: Discomfort or difficulty opening your mouth may suggest a joint issue or infection.
- Oral Infection: Abscesses or gum infections can spread quickly and should be treated immediately.
- Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Teeth: Small fractures can worsen over time, leading to more damage.
- Lost Fillings or Crowns: Missing restorations expose sensitive tooth structures and can lead to further decay.
Managing Pain Until You See Us
If you can't get to our office immediately, the following steps can help reduce pain and discomfort:
- Rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in one cup of warm water) to clean the area and ease irritation.
- Take over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen. However, avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gums.
- Apply an ice pack on the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.
- Use dental anesthetics with benzocaine for temporary pain relief (follow package instructions).
- Avoid extremely hot or cold foods and beverages.
- Apply soft orthodontic wax over any sharp edges of a broken tooth to protect the inside of your mouth.
Silent Dental Emergencies—No Pain, but Still Urgent
Not all dental emergencies cause immediate pain. A cracked tooth or a small cavity may seem harmless initially. Yet, it could still lead to nerve damage or infections if ignored. Even if you're not experiencing discomfort, contact us as soon as you notice a problem to prevent further damage.
